Bulunggitj Wunungmurra is the 15 year old son of Bruce Burrngupurrngu Wunungmurra, a remarkable yidaki craftsman who was also a first-rate player in his youth. A number of today's best yidaki players in eastern Arnhem Land credit Burrngupurrngu as their inspiration and their teacher. Among them was the late Mr M. Mununggurr, the original yidaki player for the Yothu Yindi band.

In the iDIDJ Store, I described this yidaki as follows:

"Those with an appreciation for history will find delight in this yidaki: it was the first instrument made for sale - almost 2 years ago - by the son of legendary Yirritja master Burrngupurrngu... Provenance aside, this is a scorching yidaki by Bulunggitj and a telling testament of the father-son genealogy". You can read more of it here:

This yidaki is best described as fast, responsive, lively and fun. It is faultless acoustically, having all the qualities one looks for in a high-end traditional instrument from eastern Arnhem Land. Outstanding acoustic balance and depth, a rich complex voice, and an easy overtone note are just some of the features that will enchant you.

I particularly like the way tongued accents respond on this stick. There is a nice, weighty, blunt feel to these which gives total satisfaction and gets those endorphins flowing in the brain. If your tongue is too sharp or your technique a little bit off, the accents still sound great!

Construction is noteworthy. Weighing in at only 2 kg and with uniformly thin walls throughout of 5 mm or less, this is a powerhouse instrument with warm resonance, ideal backpressure, and a stunning naturally-formed, unworked bore. It doesn't get any better than this.

Bulunggitj's fellow Dhalwangu clansman and gurrung (poison-cousin), Adam Marrilaga, gives this yirdaki a test run. Watch him burn laps around the track. Go Laga go!
