Assistant Marketing Director
UW-Whitewater 2006 Graduate
(Why did you decide to go to UW-Whitewater?)
Well I decided to go to Whitewater because well one of the reasons was my mom had gone there and she had a great experience and another reason is I wanted to stay sort of close to the area. I'm from a suburb of Milwaukee so I didn't want to go too far away for school. So, Whitewater was the perfect choice for me.
(What made you choose to study public relations?)
Ann Knabe! She was my advisor my freshman year and I, I came in not exactly knowing what I wanted to do. I knew I was good with communicating, I knew I wanted to do something with people, I knew that I enjoyed writing and so I was kind of telling her a little bit about that and she was teaching public relations, principles of public relations and she's like, why don't you just take my class, you know, see how you like it and so right away I started my major freshman year and I never looked back.
(Do you recommend an internship?)
A little piece of advice I can give to you and to any other PR students -- do an internship. I did not and I really regret it. At the time I didn't think it would fit into my schedule because like I said I was an RA and I didn't have a car, you know, I made a million excuses as to why I didn't have an internship and after I graduated, I really felt like that was something I was lacking on my resume and, you know, in general. So, I would definitely recommend an internship. If it's paid, unpaid, I, I don't think, you know, you should consider the pay when you're doing an internship because the experience you'll receive from it will be so valuable that it won't matter that you're not making money.
(Tell us about QPS and your role with the company...)
Well QPS is a full-service staffing firm. We specialize in industrial, technical, office and professional staffing and we currently have about 20 locations between Illinois and Wisconsin. And I work at the corporate headquarters which is in Brookfield. My position in the company is assistant marketing manager so what that entails...I handle all the media relations for the company as well as different special events, research, really anything that needs to be taken care of. Jack of all trades.
(What do you like best about working in public relations?)
The thing that I like best is that you never have the same day twice. Honestly, it's given me a lot of different opportunities to do basically the same thing but in different outlets, like you said. You know, you never know, kind of, what market you're going to be dealing with or what you might come across as well as the different other elements in marketing and like sales support that I do so it's really interesting. I think, you know, it's not like the typical desk job or you know, something that keeps you cooped up so that's one of the things that I like.
It was very fun to interview Anne! She was very spunky and inspirational regarding her busy schedule and being able to do an internship and how beneficial it will be to our careers. Great advice from her and a very fun interview!
