Tom Stallings was, in the words of Henry Lippincott, a prince. He was funny, talented, and he brought, to the Pike's Pick camp at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas, and energy that we'll never forget. A lot of us couldnt make it from Colorado Springs to Toms memorial in Houston, so we put this together.
Heidi McClure provided several great still shots, and contributed a memory of Tom that was accidentally taped over. She also brought a bottle of Irish whiskey that we put a real dent in.
The audio of Tom singing Northeast Texas Women came from Henry Lippincotts Carp Camp recording of 2002; its on his website at http://www.carpcamp.net/tunes2002/MD270402ce.mp3.
Marianne McTigue conceived the video and set up the session. Valerie Gardner suggested using When the Saints Go Marching In, because Tom was a Louisiana boy. Everyone contributed to the crappy mandolin verse. And it wasnt that crappy a mandolin, but we sure loved to give Tom a hard time about it, and he took it with the best smile and the best humor.
Folks in the band are, from left: Brad Hartman, guitar; Dick Carlson, bass; Charlie Hall, trumpet; Val Gardner, guitar; Marianne McTigue, fiddle; and Heidi McClure, mandolin.
Thanks to all. We sure miss Tom.
I played in our church group with Tom. He always stayed after and showed me new stuff. He always had time to teach a friend. Oh, and come to find out, we grew up about three five miles from each other. I miss him.
