@pionstail Yeah...talk about a 'patient etherized upon a table'...this reading is more like a patient being fed speed and then being allowed to pinball round a padded room. Strange because, running with the padded wall metaphor, when Hopkins is Hannibal he gives a slow and measured performance that you would think ideal for this. But no. Basically the best reading is by the great man himself. The speed really tells, in Eliots reading the poem lasts about 8 mins. With Hopkins it just clears 6!
@BelatedCommiseration agree, we are supposed to meander through the half-deserted streets and take in the sights and sounds and smells and wallow in the keen sting of regret. so much to take in on this journey, you and I, but he just races us through like it's an airport check-in
He's going too fast! This poem needs to have time taken on it. The cadence of the poem even obliges Hopkins to slow down over it at times and then he sounds good, only for him to run away with it again at the first opportunity! I dunno....can't get the staff these days.
Fantastic! Prefect! I can't believe. :OOO

It is interesting to hear different persons take of this great poem; some reading slow and delibertly, some fast as this reading.
