    i can now die a happy man

  • Film work is so different. You try to set a mood that goes with the film. I think his work enhances the films he worked on, and while maybe not his best work overall still ranks as brilliant in my eyes. Toy Story was made for the total audience and the score will appeal to all ages. That takes very special abilities.

  • Iss here is a good hymn rat here. Thanks.

  • The little woman and I hope to be attending Mr. Newman's performance this evening. I remember buying "Sail Away" in 1972.

  • this deserves the dislikes it has (at the time, 0) =}

  • @MckyMseNTarotCrds That's a good point. Randy Newman's rock stuff is among my favorites. But he still writes beautiful scores, and "You Got a Friend in Me" is an awesome song. Even if it hurt is legacy, like you said, I'm glad he did all that movie work. A bunch of Disney movies wouldn't be the same without him. He's a really sensitive film scorer, too, unlike someone like Danny Elfman.

  • @Fijate10 I agree completely. He probably made more money from soundtracks than he ever did from his proper albums, but I think ultimately they hurt his legacy. When I tell people my age or younger that I like him, they are like, "The Toy Story guy?" or "the 'I love to see you smile' guy?" They have no idea about all his bitter, sardonic, wildly funny songs. They just think of him as some big cornball.

  • Michael McKeans' rendition of 'Harps and Angels' was fantastic in the live musical version of this at the Mark Taper Forum in LA this week.

  • Randy Newman is simply the greatest singer-songwriter-composer alive today. From "Good Old Boys" to "Harps and Angels," every album is a gem. On the other hand, I'm not particulary fond of all of his film scores.

  • reminds me of "I love to see you smile"

  • god I love this guys style
