My girlfriend just gave me a Gopro Hero2 as an early christmas gift. So my 2 friends (John, Kevin) and I jumped into the water at Kakaako on Sat. Dec. 17, 2011. It was a typical shore dive on the south side of Oahu until I spotted what I thought was a roi (peacock grouper) in 50 ft of water. As I took a straight down "dive bomb" approach, the fish turned slightly as it sensed me coming and I was in shock and awe when I realized it was not a roi. For one thing the body color was tan or off white and the most noticeable feature was the shrunken looking head and beady little eyes. I paused just long enough to think WHAT THE!!! before putting in a shot centermass. After making sure the fish was secure on the tag line I started to ascend and it was only then that I remembered I did not turn on my Gopro :(

  • Just an update: after contacting various state agencies I ended up donating the fish to the Bishop Museum. The "science guy" there told me that it is a grouper w/many common names (humpback, panther, etc...) and is from the indopacific. He also had records showing that another one was speared in 1979 off of Maui. That fish was 6 lbs. my fish came in at 3.45 lbs. on the "official" scale at Hanapaa. On another note I've had people from Indonesia & Phillipines tell me that it is VERY good and tasty
