It's a leopard grouper, their usually found in aquariums. Someone must have let it go.

Just an update: after contacting various state agencies I ended up donating the fish to the Bishop Museum. The "science guy" there told me that it is a grouper w/many common names (humpback, panther, etc...) and is from the indopacific. He also had records showing that another one was speared in 1979 off of Maui. That fish was 6 lbs. my fish came in at 3.45 lbs. on the "official" scale at Hanapaa. On another note I've had people from Indonesia & Phillipines tell me that it is VERY good and tasty
