Here is the final clip of the movie which only goes to prove that revenge doesn't pay as Murphy's hatred towards the germans cost him his own life in the end

  • Haven't seen the film in years. Need to check it out again sometime. I remember watching it on cable with my dad once when I was kid, circa late-80s. It was the first time I'd ever seen a movie where the hero died, and it left quite an impact on me.

  • What is the name of the song at the end and who is singing? And is it to be found somewhere on Internet?

  • it's a tale reflecting a mans determination , ingenuity and courage against all odds. that he lost his life in the bargain is irony ..war's cousin.

  • l've often wondered why the hell a U boat capable of possibly 18 to 20 knots surface speed would dive to evade a clapped out dredger doing at best 8 knots and not very manoeuvrable at that. The estuary looked about 3 miles wide there so plenty of sea way for them to just go around the dredger on the surface. That commander deserved to lose his boat l reckon. But then the film wouldn't have had a satisfactory ending would it? Pity about Murphy though, he should have lived...Oh well, never mind !

  • I have ya!

  • Captain Ahab 1971 :)

  • It looked like the submarine crew was trying to plug up some of the holes where the water was rushing in. Like that would do them any good with the rate and force it was rushing in. Also if Murphy would've unhooked the torpedo from the line rather than drop it all in could that have possibly prevented the crane from falling on him? His ship still might've sunk but he could've safely swam to shore to announce his victory.

  • I seriously doubt Louis could have saved him even if he was there, no way one guy could have moved that crane jib in time.

  • cheese eating surrender monkeys

  • Couple of nerdy facts: the submarine that was used in the film was later sold to Argentina and became the Santa Fe - which was sunk but the British in South Georgia in April 1982. The Grumman Duck amphibian was flown by an Irish stunt pilot called Paul Antrim who later became a well-known actor himself.

I may have made one of those statements up - or both of them....
