I had a really bad time with aphids this spring. I just wanted to share a solution that worked for me... Mince 3 or 4 cloves of garlic, add to a cup of olive oil and let sit (in fridge) for 3 or 4 days. Strain garlic chunks from oil and add a tablespoon or so of the oil, along with 3 or 4 drops of dish soap, to a pint of water. Spray on plants.

  • well u jinxed me..I now have aphids eating up my eggplant I babied all winter and put outside some time ago and now its covered in little black bugs eating holes in it..am making ur concoction now..question, does the olive oil stop up the sprayer?? cuz 2 T. seems like alot of oil for just one pint of water/soap mixture and seems like the soap would break up the oil so that its worthless or floating on top so am wondering if u need oil at all?? what do u think?

  • @kokonutbaby1 I didn't have any problem with the oil clogging my sprayer. It is a means of getting the garlic into the mixture and it coats the little buggers so they can't breath. Hope this helps. ~Jeri

  • if you use dish detergent and water in a spray container it works. I have never used olive oil and garlic. just the detergent and water.

  • @crewlla I have tried that too and it didn't work for me but this sure did. Thanks for the suggestion. ~Jeri

  • i just chopped up my garlic and fingers crossed this works for me. My romaine is not happy :(

  • God damn aphids ruined my broccoli plants i discovered millions of them coating the stalks, had to pull the plants out!

  • Do you think it would be safe to use organic aphid spray directly on vegetables such as apsaragus, lettuce, cabbage, or celery?

  • Dear Balconygrow, Just another thank-you for your great antidote for aphids. I live in Vancouver and have a ledge with a box to grow flowers and veg. Also two hanging baskets were the infestation started. Anyway the only place I could spray your mixture was in the tub. You should have seen the thousands of dead aphids that fell off. Thank-you.

  • This really works and iv'e had no problems with flies. Iv'e now got a bit of abandoned land near my apartment that iv'e turned into a garden and have also introduced ladybirds

  • Thank you, Jeri, I will try it. My melon and cucumber plants are covered with aphids too.
