Monique wins an Oscar for portraying an abusive mother. A white sorority wins a national "step show" competition but suddenly the judges change their minds and declare an African American sorority a winner, too. Retired national news anchor Dan Rather makes a comparison using President Obama and watermelon. On the next Another View, we're talking about the way African Americans are portrayed in pop culture. Join our discussion with Professor Eleanor Earl, Cinema Program Coordinator at Hampton University; Bill Thomas, Community Activist; Dr. Wanda Brockington, Chair of Norfolk State University's School of Mass Communications and Journalism; and Roger Chesley, Associate Editor of the Virginian-Pilot. Plus, go behind the scenes of "Porgy and Bess".

  • The best thing about traditional is sharing with someone, but I understand some black people feel that we already don't have much of our own,

  • @bornthug213 You can't have a panel without one Elizabeth hasslebeck type of person.

  • He's an idiot. IT'S A MOVIE! It's not real dumbass Bill, so grow up and complain about other things.

  • Bill Thomas may be controversial, but some of the points that he made were true to life, like the Dan Rather comment. I agree with Roger Chesley about the white sorority feeling comfortable enough to enter the step contest, however, I think the big deal about that is that when Black people see White people come into what we feel is "our thing" or "our world", they get 20 extra points just for having gumption. That is the part that is not fairly scored and gives them an advantage.

  • I agree with the panel, especially Mr. Thomas ,most people are caught up with their own opinion rather than learn what really is. If you have not lived in the lower class you cannot speak for the lower class. Anyone who can open their mind cam really see what Is going on today in our society, it has been going on for centuries

  • This Bill Thomas character is a disgrace! He's too ignorant to serve on anybody's panel, and fail on WHROTV's behalf for having him. No bueno!

  • The entire program has racial views. Almost every show is about black oppression and how blacks can be successful in a white world. And this is a govt run operation!

  • The guy in the purple tie didn't even see the movie but calls it 'decadent'.

Points out Badu's video but makes no point outside of supposed morality.

    Group think in full effect.

  • They need to lighten up and face it, abuse does happen in ALL communities, and this movie was merely recognizing it. If it is understanding of their heritage they want, they should show the highlights and the dark spots of everything, not just show only the best of the best.
