"We take for granted in our lives, choice, in every othere area, whether it's Pop Tarts or cereal or cell phones. But really education is the most important thing," said Reason's Director of Education Lisa Snell, "Especially as a parent, you want your kids to have a solid education."

Snell makes the case that school choice is now at a tipping point. In the United States, more charter schools are cropping up, while tax dollars and voucher systems are now allowing the money to follow the child. Snell says that there is evidence supporting that these new educational options are effective, and less costly, in improving the quality of K-12 education.

"Kids in America have more choices today than they've ever had before," said Snell, "Every empirical study shows a positiive effect, and no study has found a negative effect."

National School Choice Week is Jan. 22-28, and has hundreds of events scheduled promoting these ideas.

About 7 minutes. Produced by Sharif Matar and interviewed by Tracy Oppenheimer.

  • @sunnyboyX89 - Do you consider an economy with 80,000 pages of regulations at the federal level to be a free market? Or have you been reading too much Chomsky?

  • There are more children being homeschooled than are in charter schools, yet all we hear about is charter schools as the solution. I think the more libertarian solution is to get the government out of the school business and reduce property, sales, and state taxes accordingly. There will be enough money left over for people to send their children to a private schools or to homeschool them.

  • @sunnyboyX89 - The state is not a private entity but it sure caves into them. Government is the negation of voluntary exchange.

  • For a long time now I've been skeptical of the effectiveness of the way schools are. This video is very promising and interesting. If America wants to be the world's powerhouse again it's going to have to improve it's schooling.

  • Schooling extremely wasteful if its forced. Think about how many people are doing the most basic jobs who have spent more than 12 years in school. You don't need 12 years for being a cashier, plumber, carpenter, garbageman, drivers, etc. We need specialized schools. And if we are going to FORCE schooling on children we should be minimum. Have you ever heard of "The three Rs"?

  • @StateExempt

Do you know how much regulations a corporation has? Those regulations are from an state that is an private corporation. Do you really think that this government is legitimated by the people??? There is no legitimation, this corrupt government is an private corporation owned by private corporations. This government is the result of the free market.

  • @Tacotruck1166

The current state is a corporation. We live in 100% free market capitalism. Of course it can put me in prison.

  • @sunnyboyX89 Ignorant much? The state can put you in prison. Can a corporation? Derp...

  • fuck school. all it did was slow me down. educate yourself.

  • @jetrpg22 I guess most public services could be deemed socialistic, it's all in the way you look at it I suppose. I just think at the state and local level, when you can make the most competition possible the result will be the most efficient. This usually includes an overall minimal role for government on the whole. In education, the more choice available to students with a relatively small amount of regulations could be more beneficial than the system we have in place now.

  • @ImhoffInstruments Most swedish "socialistic" functions are very similar to this. A story the US media and gov fails to report. Japan is often similar is many ways also.
