A book is an other world, a book is an escape, a book can make you live things you never could experience in reality. I can kinda understand it :p

I read Donne too and know this one but here Paul Simon is saying the opposite. He wants to be an island. He is not interested in "for whom the Bell Tolls" or in being part of the main - he wants out - protected by his books and his poetry. I sympathise. The last 4 years for me have included my husband being ill and losing his job as a result, the death of my mum and sister, a broken arm and 5 months off work. I would not have survived without my books. "Friends" were nowhere.

No need for embarrassment at all. Sorry for the pain you have - interestingly, to me, is that he says is "is" a rock - not that he wants to be - maybe he felt alone, too. I feel sorry for some of the other responders here. I guess my take would be that, like it or not, we are NOT alone, like a cork floating on an ocean(my dad said that - unless he was quoting someone older :) ) but I think in our difficulties, we sometimes don't see/feel the love around us. Anyway - I wish you well.

:) I am pretty sure John Donne precedes Bon Jovi by a few hundred hundred years- look it up - you might like like it.

Listened to this song so many times, even put it on repeat! I need to learn the lyrics in the stanzas and write them out as quotes for my English exam:(

During my 20-something years, I had a lot of crap going on, so I avoided dating or otherwise finding a LTR. Then I really did like this song. I am now 35, looking for love, and this song now TERRIFIES me for the opposite reason. I keep mishearing “I am alone” as “I am oh-ohld (old)”, like I will be an anti-emotional schizoid when I become old.

I replied to you recently and am embarrassed by the stupidly personal nature of my reply. I don't care what number Meditation it was but Simon and Garfunkel were hugely literate so they would haveknown Donne and his thoughts. I think you are right that this song is a reflection of their (well, Paul's) on Donne's words It will always be an interesting debate - how far any man is an island?.
