In just over a year of being a member of the ADJA, I've learned one thing: There are plenty of EXCUSES for not joining and very few REASONS. Cost Too Much? Could it be you're not charging what you're worth? Poor Quality Membership? Then help raise the bar by lending your expertise. Forced to carry insurance? Wait until you're hauled into court because a drunk guest stumbles off a table and claims he couldn't help but dance 'cause the DJ was playing great music. Your ADJA is what YOU make it.
Nothing against Dr. D personally but as a business owner I'm not going to leave my business and the critical planning to an iphone app. That's the best ADJA has to offer? When they opened the local chapter in Houston the only thing it produced were DJ's that would not qualify for membership in the local DJ association for poor business practices & their promotion of carrying insurance. While I think insurance is a good idea thanks to ADJA we are forced to carry a million dollar liability policy.
I've had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Drax 2 years ago when he gave a "Recession Proofing your Business" lecture with the DFW ADJA chapter. There was another speaker that night (cant remember his name) he talked about market perception. He was an undercover reporter for Brides magazine and under that guise, was able to interview brides about their perspective on "DJs" in general. all i can say is it wasnt good. he also found a clip from SNL spoofing the "Mr. DJ". i can't find that clip ANYWARE!
