September 22, 2011 - Wong Auditorium, MIT - In 1967, as the Vietnam War escalated, Noam Chomsky penned The Responsibility of Intellectuals, a stunning rebuke to scientists and scholars for their subservience to political power. Today we face a similar array of crises, from wars to escalating debt. What are the obligations of intellectuals in this day and age? Introduction by Joshua Cohen.

Ideas Matter, a joint project of Boston Review and MIT's Political Science Department, is a lecture series that brings our writers together with other experts and practitioners for substantive debate on the challenges of our times. The series, free and open to the public, will offer four events in the 2011--12 academic year.

If I introduced him I would just say, "Chomsky". That's all that's needed, not 20 min of blathering.

Judge a person by his works not by jargon such as intellectual and poster-boy !! According to the Arts and Humanities Citation Index in 1992, Chomsky was cited as a source more often than any other living scholar from 1980 to 1992, and was the eighth most cited source overall.

that and Chomsky is in his 80's now. He was doing activist work back in the 50's and 60's he even traveled with the black panthers and was at Fred Hampton's funeral (the black panther killed by the FBI)! You don't get more anarchically active than associating with the Panther's when they were a militant organization.

    Now he has grand-kids.

Since you are following law of the state, how are you pursuing anarchy ? What Chomsky stands is for historical facts that our governments don't want us to know and remember. And how many millionaire college professor fight for the rights of individual across globe without buckling under false propaganda of government ? The point here is not about being intellectual but being courageous to call a spade a spade.

Oh, Chomsky falling for that Eurocentric idea of "Intellectuals." More white men with their lofty knowledge, except that they should work for the common people and lead them. I wonder what its like to be a millionaire college professor who writes about Anarchism as if its all scholarly history and not a living process lived by people below him, economically and "intellectually." Some of us are going to live more simple lives and actually pursue Anarchy, rather than that Jill Stein crap he pushes
