This guy had to have help by bigger fish, otherwise it wouldn't have worked for so long. He has the goods on others so they are gonna let him off easy. The rest of us go to jail, he is to rich to fail!!
Martha Stewart did much less and she was treated badly solely because she was a woman and women are not supposed to break into the elite classes.

I think the witch doing the reporting is a racist. Casually making the assumption that the perpetrators of most "petty crime" are of an ethnic background other than that of Madoff.
I like Palast, but this was an example of how not to do journalism.

One of the US government's primary functions is to take US citizens' money and give it (very few strings attached) to people like Madoff so that they can devise ever better and more devious methods to further enrich themselves at the public's expense. There are lots of Madoffs out there, but their behavior (especially at this scale) is only possible because of the way the government, the economic system, and corporations are structured.
