As part of the PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature, with the support of the Institut Ramon LLull, Deutches Haus at NYU presents this conversation between Quim Monzó and Robert Coover about Monzó's work, primarily his novel Benzina (Gasoline).
A selection of Benzina is read in Catalan at the beginning of this clip. The reading revolves around Nighthawks, the universal painting by Edward Hopper which is metamorphosed and made absurd by Monzó's surrealist narrative.
Monzó then shares his take on what makes good writing, and then talks a little about reading Catalan authors in his youth.
