Greenberg was born on January 8, 1993 in Baltimore, Maryland, one month prior to her due date, weighing just four pounds (1.8 kg). She was born with anterior hip dislocation, a condition which caused her legs to be swiveled upwards, awkwardly, toward her shoulders; this was corrected surgically. Otherwise, Greenberg appeared to be a normal infant.

In her first six years, Greenberg went through a series of unexplained medical emergencies from which she recovered. She had seven perforated stomach ulcers. She also suffered a seizure. This was followed by what was later diagnosed as a stroke; weeks later, no damage was detected. At age five, Greenberg had a mass in her brain that caused her to sleep for 14 days. The doctors diagnosed the mass as a brain tumor. However, Greenberg later awoke, and physicians found no tumor present. Greenberg's doctor states that the source of her sudden illness remains a mystery.

Over the next several years, the Greenbergs visited many specialists, looking for an explanation for their daughter's strange condition. In 2001, when Dateline documented Greenberg, she was still the size of a six-month-old infant, weighing just 13 lb (5.9 kg) at 27 inches (69 cm) tall. The family still had no explanation. Greenberg's mother Melanies said: "They [the specialists] just said shell catch up. Then we went to the nutritionist, the endocrinologist. We tried the growth hormone...". The growth hormone treatment had no effect. Howard, Greenberg's father, said: "I mean she did not put on an ounce or she did not grow an inch ... Thats when I knew there was a problem." After the growth hormone administration failed, the doctors, unable to diagnose a known condition, named her condition Syndrome X.

  • You can't imagine how much this fascinates me. Cases like this are why I wish I had became a doctor or biologist.

  • "The key to eternal youth" She's not a fucking experiment, and if the parents are smart, they won't WILL NOT let her be.

  • @hannaht13 well, shes not going to live to be 116 years old...

  • Never mind why she's what she is. It just makes her unique.

  • On wikipedia it says that her telomeres are shortening at the normal rate, which means that she's still aging, she's just not developing. They may be able to learn things about development, and genetics by studying her, but I don't know why they're talking as if she could hold the answers to aging when her telomeres are still degrading at a normal rate.

  • I turned 16 on October 27th 2010 and i m 17 now

  • rich parents before the they tell about her

  • @MeetDarlingNikki Thanks for the info. Do you know if there are other people with the same endocrine deficiency as Maria? Is there a video with English subtitles for Maria?

  • @rebornsbymargaret Brooke and Maria have two different conditions. Brooke's is chromosomal, and Maria's is endocrinological and possibly even congenital.

  • @hannaht13 From a romantic sci-fi fan's point of view, the actual realisation that we have someone who was born in the last millennium and will potentially be able to live for hundreds of years until and possibly beyond the age of space colonisation and the realisation of so many current sci-fi fantasies, experiencing hundreds of years of history through a single set of eyes elevates my heart immensely.

Although it does make me question whether I'm living in someone else's quantum reality.
