I made this video of my pupil, a form three ESL student in Hong Kong, and I reading from the X-Men's Dark Phoenix Saga to highlight my student's inability to read aloud properly, despite having learned the English language since kindergarten, nine years ago. At least forty minutes every day, five days a week, for nine consecutive years, and this is the product; it's a shame that many local Chinese people cannot read properly.

  • Probably the greatest fear that the West has of the East, other than their growing manufacturing abilities, is that their children are receiving a better education. Granted, a second language profficiency is different than math or other core subjects, but do you find that their education and it's reputation is overstated or is it on par with a North American standard?

By the way, great choice of reading material. I read the Phoenix/Black Phoenix saga as a child too. Great videos.

  • To be honest, I'm not sure if they are receiving a better education; their emphasis, however, on hard work and not on ability apparently gives them an advantage in ability-based education systems like that found in the US, if recent research is any indicator. Indeed, effort, critical thinking and creativity are a fearsome trio; Hong Kong has the former while the U.S. tries to teach the latter 2.

Chris Claremont's X-men run was amazing; definitely some of the best mutant stories ever written.

  • This would be a lot better if your camera was in focus well enough for us to read the dialogue. I'm trying to do a running record with it for my bilingual education course but its difficult to do when I can't read the script or understand the youth's accent.
