Paintings of buddhist Hell (narok) at Wat Sri Dorn Chai in Bahn Ngob, Northern Thailand.

The place is divided in eight pits known as sanjihwa, kalasut(ra), sangkaht, rohruwon, maharohruwon, tapon, patahpon and awejih. The abyss or deepest pit where those with the most severe sins receive punishment is awejih. Hell is presided over by Yama (in Thai called Phra Yom), the Vedic god of death, who is also known as Yommaraat, the 'king of the realm of death'. He is assisted by his envoy Yommathoot, the angel of death who has it as his task to lead the souls of the dead to judgment before Yama and his scribes Suwan and Suwaan. He is usually depicted with horns and holding a trident or some other weapon. Temples often have gardens displaying horrifying images, displaying beings called Yommabaan dealing out cruel punishments to the sinners.

Peintures d'enfer bouddhiste (narok) au Wat Sri Dorn Chai a Bahn Ngob (Thailande du Nord)

"On appelle ainsi autant d'enfers qui occupent l'espace entre les mondes joints les uns aux autres,et là où il y a trois mondes qui se touchent, là au milieu se trouve un lôkanta-narok. Dans cet enfer régnent des ténèbres éternelles et très-épaisses;
Description du Royaume Thai ou Siam, Jean Baptiste PALLEGOIX, 1854.

  • unlike christianity buddhists don't believe you stay in hell for eternity.

  • Buddhism adherents have used the hells that people sometimes visit after this life as a stimulus to awaken to spiritual values, not to scare people into being Buddhists. The point is to awaken, not to obsess over hell like an idiot. Everyone should investigate the core teachings of Buddhism before making a judgement about it.

  • الله يهديكم .

  • @kensei85 thank you

  • @oscie1 I heard this in a talk by head Buddhist monk, Ajahn Brahm, his channel is BuddhistSocietyWA, and I believe the title of the talk was "What Happens After You Die?" I don't know if this link'll work, but it ends watch?v=BZZupDuprhU

  • @kensei85 where did you read this?

  • @oscie1 A story goes that a bodhisattva died & went to hell, where he was greeted by a man who had a sawblade in his head, the man said his punishment was to have this blade in his head for 400 years, and now his time was up, he was reborn. It was the bodhisattvas turn, he felt the intense agony of the blade in his head and thought "I wish I could stay here for 1,200 years, so the next 2 people don't have to suffer this cruel fate" and with that kind thought the blade shattered & he was reborn.

  • @kensei85 holy shit ,that means trillions of years of torture

  • @dabuddhist Thats awesome. Death is also a learning experience and you end up in different realms.

  • @dabuddhist and Muslims, don't Forget Muslims.

  • @dabuddhist and moreover, Christianity and Islam are the only religions that send people to hell for not believing in the existence of God and that none are like him, other religions solely base hell on deeds and don't care weather your atheist, agnostic, or a polytheist......

  • I would just like to remind people here that Buddhism does adapt to local regional cultures as in this case. The beliefs and dieties are generally transferred to a Buddhist version of themselves. Buddhism's original teachings did not include heaven or hell, but move away from religiosity to focus on awakening, which is the main point. You are supposed to take the version you can handle and grow with it.
