  • Music, however expressed, is still just that . . . an expression . . . so should it matter if it's perfect or done by the regulars? If that were true, then no one would ever play anything . . .

  • Yuiyean: Being Asian doesn't mean you're an expert on gamelan (gamelan itself is not a dance). Many Asian people have little knowledge of their own traditional arts. My Music of South Asia professor was Caucasian, but she knew more about that than anyone in my family (from India) ever knew.

Art shouldn't be limited to the group that originated it. I bet you wouldn't be laughing at the many Asians who perform Western music and dance. Some are professionals, but others are not.

  • @TimTimmenycharoo Well if that's not a pretentious comment, then I don't know what is...Not to mention you can argue that any group of people with their own culture can suck the soul out of art forms of other cultures. Also while I do agree with you about the Japanese horror films ( the American remakes are pretty bad), you can't really use that in the same context as this, and even if it was, aren't you forgetting many great horror films made in the west throughout the century?

  • fery nice

  • i love the culture of bali and totaly respect all bali dancers :)

  • racism is really cool, please drag it into art more often. though i do prefer to hear it done by people who were raised on it rather than people with an interest in it, at least they're learning about such a beautiful art form that exists in a country that most americans wouldn't even know existed.

  • saya bangga sama group sekar jaya. johnnie.p.swiss
