@otaconas I know that you probably don't care any more, since this is a response to a 2 year old post, but an IR pen is basically just a little flash light, but it goes on when you press the button and goes off when you release the button, the best ones have a current limiting resister to improve battery life, and have the IR LED pointing out at the Wii Remote instead of straight out of the top of the pen. For 2 AA batteries, an 18 ohm resistor would be best if you are using the TSAL 6400 LED.

where are the IR LEDs pointing to? just in the length of the pen? they don't seem to be shinig directly into the wiimote ir reader..

The light angle of the IR LEDS are pretty big, so if you hold the leds towards the ceilling, the wiimote can still detect them a little bit.
