He would know of the exit because of the dharma's research, which the other's claimed after they killed all of the initiative.

@dazlok23 Perhaps because Widmore was the leader and lived on the island for over 30 years. Even the Dharma knew it was the exit. Yet they didn't all have to go through it themselves. Charlotte found the polar bear skeleton there in her season 4 flashback, with the Dharma tracking device around its neck. Just because Widmore didn't appear at the exit as Ben and Locke did, doesn't mean he didn't know that's where it was. Jeesh.

Well Charlotte works for Widmore, and Charlotte found a polar bear in the middle of the tunisian desert (shown in her flashback) and Widmore would most likely know that there were polar bears on his island, and would put two and two together :)
