Prof. Rajeeva Wijesinghe queries as to why Sri Lanka was being persecuted
June 16, 2011 Parliamentarian Prof. Rajeeva Wijesinghe has queried as to why Sri Lanka was being persecuted for having got rid of one of the most dangerous terrorist outfits in the world. In an interview with Al Jazeera Prof. Wijesinghe asked why they were being prosecuted for having rescued three hundred thousand people who were being held as hostages. Sri Lankan Liberal MP, Prof. Rajiva Wijesinha who is also the Advisor on Reconciliation to the President and former Secretary of the Human Rights Ministry, emphasized the fact that segments of the international media not only pre-judged but also distorted the issue considering neither the technical analysis provided by the Sri Lankan experts nor the possibility that the material may have been subject to manipulation. In response to a question by the Al-Jazeera News Anchor Parliamentarian Prof. Wijesinghe questioned as to why concern was only being raised about the alleged death of civilians during the war while the international community turned a blind eye to similar incidents in other parts of the world.

C-4 maintaining close links with LTTE and pro LTTE elements to promote their interests -- Defence Secretary
June 16, 2011 Local News No Comments
Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has said that Channel 4 had maintained close contacts with the LTTE and pro LTTE elements overseas and promote their interests while misleading the international community based on false evidence. In a special statement, he said Channel 4 had failed to highlight the US Military killing the world's most dangerous terrorist Osama Bin Laden and his family but had gone after Sri Lanka because of the international funding they were receiving from LTTE sources. Several scientific tests conducted on the footage had proven that the videos had been heavily edited and were manipulated before being aired. The Government had engaged in protecting the families of LTTE cadres and the LTTE leaders as it had rehabilitated 11,000 former LTTE cadres who had surrendered as well as 4000 proven LTTE cadres who had not confessed their involvement in the killings conducted by the outfit. He also said that during the war, the army was always committed to saving the lives of innocent civilians and never harmed their lives. According to Mr. Rajapaksa, the lives of civilians as well as the families of the LTTE leaders, such as widows of LTTE Sea Tiger Leader Soosai and the LTTE Political Chief Thamilchelvan, who were stranded due to the war, were protected by the armed forces during and after the war. Mr. Rajapaksa added that the army always behaved professionally giving utmost priority to safeguard the lives of innocent civilians and the allegation against the army is clearly to tarnish the image of it internationally. The Defence Secretary went on to brand the documentary as unfair, saying that it was aimed at destroying the Nation.
