Japan's Special Peace Envoy Yasushi Akashi claims that there are no links with granting assistance for Sri Lanka's development and the ceasefire abrogation.(15/01/2008)
He made this claim at a media conference before leaving home after a three-day visit. He emphasised that Japan will not mediate on peace or other initiatives taken by the Sri Lanka government. It had no authority to do so. They present their views. Granting of aid to Sri Lanka is not based on the ceasefire. These are two different matters. Several factors are considered when granting assistance. Mr. Akashi told journalists that he had talks with all sides during his stay in the island. All of them presented important views and proposals. Dawn of peace in Sri Lanka is important to Japan as well as other countries. He disclosed about an assurance given by the President to him that a set of proposals will be put forward through the All Party Conference.
