At the 1973 Dutch Grand Prix , David Purley abandoned his own race in an attempt to save the life of fellow driver Roger Williamson, whose car was upside down on fire following a horrific accident. His efforts were to no avail as he received no help from the nearby track marshals, and Williamson perished in the fire

brave brave man this should have been avoided the guy would have been saved sooner ad the had flipped the car with purely what was with the guy looking like he just put his coat on ?where was the flags to stop the race?look at the film he n the other guy am there before purely shame purely was taken out by a plane sad twist of fate he must have gone to the grave knowing his mate should have been alive

I Watched this when it broadcast last year, and again thank god that Jackie Stewart got to grips with the race organisers back then ............... still a sad piece of F1 history

It's so sad, I saw a lot of Videos about this accident, my Info is that David abandoned his race because he and Roger were good friends.......
A lot of people said he died not in the fire, also he was not harmed by the crash, he died because of the asphyxiation!
I just can say, i hope one of my friends would be great as David Purley..... then I'am fine till the rest of my life, cause i know theres someone watching for me.......

The most stupid part is that a firetruck was within 100m but wasn't allowed to drive in opposite direction, so a firetruck from approximately 500m back had to come and was to late. :( R.I.P. R.Williamson
