Even incarnate lamas get hooked by the addictions of this life like the 6th Dali Lama was a drunken womanizer and Milarepa was a murderer...and we can learn from them to see for ourselves and wake up to how we are living our lives. Thanks to Pema's books I've been able to deal with my own suffering and help others to wake up . Thanks Pema, I no longer run from fear but sit right with it and I believe an enlightened society is achieveable and in the Power of One!!

@bostonpaul123 Absolutely agree. We are taught (in Vedanta & other monastic traditions) that one cannot be too careful. Always at risk for a downfall. Thinking about this from your post. If she has addressed the issue of blindly following spiritual teachers without due awareness, analysis and discrimination, she needs to. For herself and for others.

@merylste I didn't post my initial comment because I don't like Pema or her teachings, but rather because she is attracting people to an organization that has been marred by many scandals of this kind. Many students have been abused and potential students should be heads up. Pemas teachings are fine. There are other groups that teach the same thing, that see abuse for what it is and have proetcted their students better.

@merylste Well, i don't think all people who attain high spiritual states "fall off". If they can fall off that badly, how high were there states? And for that matter, high "states" aren't really what one should be after, but actual spiritual transformation. Pema seems great, but she is part of a big cover within her organization regarding her teacher. Do you think she tells people what I wrote above? Only in private when directly confronted. To disclose would be to bite the hand that feeds her.

@bostonpaul123 People who have attained high spiritual states fall off like anyone else. When they do, they are no longer worthy to teach. Pema Chodron "lives the life" and has much to offer. The teachings have great value and have elevated my life and the lives of many others. "Cut off the head and tail--and eat the fish".

Trungpa Rinpoche died of acute alcoholism and drug addiction. While alive, he had students waiting on him, hand and foot, and slept with hundreds of students. Before he died, he appointed a successor and named him the “Regent”. The Regent slept with many students also. He contracted AIDs and died of Aids. But, after he was diagnosed as HIV positive, he continued to sleep with students and infected at least one who later died of AIDS. So, think of all this when you emulate these people.
