Here is my first video for DXARTS 452.
5 weeks of planning, filming and editing.
The premise was to create a 5 minute short film with the theme of "Chain Reaction".
I had the idea from "If you give a mouse a cookie" and what would happen if you tried reading the book after ripping a few pages out.
The reason I chose this particular narrative is because I wanted my audience to feel empathy for Blue's uphill battle against a seemingly perpetual bad day. We have all been there before when a bad day just gets worse and worse (and yes, this film is slightly autobiographical in that sense).
I didn't want a linear narrative because I give the audience exactly what they need to piece together the story themselves, even when its out of order; there are three different sets of glasses, the boot, and the tie which let you know which part of the day each scene is portraying. The color is also another big factor. I wanted my three main colors (Red, Blue, and Green) to pop and be immediately distinguishable from the rest of the scene. I created a "hyper-realistic" coloration making the darks darker and the lights lighter, all while enhancing particular colors.
On a deeper level, the glasses represent a way of seeing reality. With each new set of glasses, Blue's reality becomes more clear. However, whenever the glasses come off, things don't seem to go his way.
I would give you the order of events, but I think that would ruin the overall feel that I wanted.
In "Retrospect" (the film and in real life), you really don't think of events in the order that they happened. There are a jumble of memories that flow to bring you to where you are right now. Connecting the dots to the individual catalyst that started everything (and there may be more than one...) is left up to you.
