Squirrel Bait was a pop punk band that came out of nowhere in 1983 from of all places, Louisville, Kentucky. At first, the Squirrel Bait record released in 1985 by small indie label Homestead, did not cause much of a stir in the music world. But after receiving raving reviews from Bob Mould (then of Husker Du) and Evan Dando (of The Lemonheads) among others in the music press, people began to take notice. Spin Magazine quickly hopped on the bandwagon and proclaimed that lead singer Peter Searcy had the best voice in rock and roll next to Paul Westerberg. Even with all of these accolades, the band was able to only stay afloat until 1988 and release one more record, 1986s Skag Heaven. By then it seemed to be a case of too much too soon for the members of Squirrel Bait, considering that the average age of the band members at this time were an amazing 17.

  • Definitely NOT pop punk. If anything No-Wave or Emo.

  • @FuttBucker667 yep... not sure if SB was touring before this, but that would have made them awfully young. if we're going to talk about age and whatnot, the replacements were young enough to be in highschool, and in tommy's case, middle school, at the peak of their popularity for the most part... maybe im just biased because i love the replacements more than anything. but squirrel bait has always been awesome to me too!!

  • @stoneaxeprod You might wanta check your dates on that one, buddy. The Replacements formed in '79 (I'm pretty sure, anyway) and their materpiece of an album, Let it Be, came out in '84--a whole year before Squirrel Bait even released their first LP.

  • @blehdurr I do too really, but since I found Slint Nirvana didn't mean much to me honestly.

  • @LucidDream but what about people like me? i like the three bands. =D

and yeah, it was because of Slint i started to listen to Squirrel Bait.

  • Slint brought me here. :P Screw Nirvana when you have bands like Slint and Squirrel Bait.

  • My brother sent me here, if you like this stuff listen to slint too! They have some great songs including washer!

  • Squirrelbait predates Nirvana and The Replacements by several years. They were contemporaries of Husker Du and briefly toured with them. Part of their "magic" is that they were mostly under 18 when their first album hit and couldn't tour. They were the real thing - teenagers who sang about what mattered to them in a very dark and aggressive way. They broke up before any of them were 21 - which is probably a good thing. Listen to how they go in to the chorus and you'll see so many bands to come.

  • I love this band. They always makes me feel like I'm 15 and I want to break some shit.

  • awsome band and yeah nirvana brought me here
