Dear me! Madame Irene Papas does look in Greek garments like an ancient stature or vase painting brought to life! Shame that there was no equivalent to the insidious British Broadcasting corporation in Greece, as the BBC made a complete Shakespeare collection and so should someone had done with the works of the tragic triad, Euripides, Aeschylus and Sophocles; as the Greek versions of Electra, the Trojan Women (though made with English actors) and Iphigenia in Tauris are brilliant.
@junejoyleng Scholars have discussed this. Her first act of burial would have been enough ritually to prevent him from wandering as a spirit without finding his place in the Underworld. But it would not have prevented him from being ravaged by scavengers. She does seem to want people to know she is doing it, too -- she says to Ismene at the beginning that even if her sister does not want to help, she should announce the act, not hide it. Clearly she is not only loving, but defiant.
Why did Antigone went back a second time to Polynice's body?
Because she heard that the guards cleared the dust? Because she forgot the libations? Or because she secretly was tired of living and wanted to be caught?
Being defiant and brave toward the abuses of the powerful is precisely Antigone great message.
