Jean Borthayre (25 May 1901, Musculdy - 25 April 1984, Montmorency) was a French operatic baritone, particularly associated with the French and Italian repertories.
Mainly self-taught, Borthayre began his career singing as a soloist in a Basque choir, touring Europe. In about 1936, he began studying voice with his wife Marie-Louise, daughter of bass Louis Azéma. He made his operatic debut in 1941, at the Capitole de Toulouse, as Hérode in Hérodiade, where he remained until 1945.
After the war, he began appearing at various opera houses throughout France, Bordeaux, Marseille, Strasbourg, etc. He made his debut at both the Paris Opéra and the Opéra-Comique in 1951, as Valentin in Faust, and Zurga in Les pêcheurs de perles, respectively. He was to sing at these two theatres until 1968.
Borthayre was largely based in France, singing little abroad, and became the epitome of the "French Style" of singing, meaning essentially impeccable diction and musical refinement. He also enjoyed considerable success in Verdi roles, such as Rigoletto, Germont, Renato, etc., which in his days were mainly sung in the national language in France.
Borthayre can be heard in a few complete opera recordings, notably; Les pêcheurs de perles, opposite Mattiwilda Dobbs, Lakmé, opposite Mado Robin, Faust and Manon, opposite Victoria de los Ángeles.

Géori (Georgette) Boué (née le 16 octobre 1918 à Toulouse) est une soprano française, l'une des plus célèbres cantatrices françaises des années 1940-1960
Elle étudie au Conservatoire de Toulouse, le piano et la harpe, ainsi que le chant avec Claude Jean. Elle débute très jeune (1934) au Capitole de Toulouse où elle s'impose rapidement dans ses rôles d'élection, tels Marguerite (Faust), Juliette (Roméo et Juliette), Manon (Manon), Gilda (Rigoletto), Violetta (La traviata).
Elle fait ses débuts à l'Opéra-Comique en 1939, en Mimi de La Bohème, et à l'Opéra de Paris en 1942, en Marguerite de Faust, elle y chantera également; Desdémone d'Otello, les rôle-titres de Mireille, Louise, Thaïs, Madama Butterfly, Tatiana de Eugène Onéguine, etc.
En 1943, elle tourne le film La Malibran, avec Sacha Guitry.
A l'étranger, elle parait à Mexico, Barcelone, Chicago, Rio de Janeiro, et à La Scala de Milan, en Mélisande, avec son mari, le baryton Roger Bourdin, sous la direction de Victor de Sabata, en 1949. Dans les années 1960, elle ajoute à son répertoire les rôles de Charlotte (Werther), Carmen et Tosca, ainsi que des opérettes, telles La Belle Hélène et La Veuve Joyeuse.
Chanteuse au timbre clair et dotée d'une diction impeccable, elle a laissé un enrgistrement célèbre de Thaïs, avec son mari Roger Bourdin.

A great mistake

Borthayre was one of the greatest baritones- glorious combination of diction, power and legato- stupendous ringing tones- and Boue is excellent as Nedda, who is not a particularly sympathetic heroine. Great rendition of this powerful scena! Thank you!!

Borthayre was THE barytone of Paris Opera Garnier . Still up to day....beautiful.

This ricoding is off of course. The way of singing is still that in fFance illustrated by Mme Geori Boué!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ugly

Borthayre voice is stupenda!!!!!!! Great diction ........ Very good but

He has been the great baryton at his time of Paris Opera!!! At that time the french singing was up... Now everybody héas to go to Italy.....

Of course the ricording is ugly...
