I'm sorry, I know it's sad and all, but he was not trying to save her. It's actually a reflex that almost every cat has where they associate a soft texture with there mother's dugs. They also do it on blankets or couches. So no, he was nottrying to save her, and assuming so just shows a lack of understanding regarding cat's brains, wich are not so big by the way.

As a person who has almost always had a cat or two, it's pretty easy to tell that what's going on in this video is sexual. My wife, a veterinarian, also agrees. Cats don't have the mental capacity to comprehend death. That isn't a bad thing, but people need to stop projecting human characteristics to species that we have little in common with.
