This is where M. R. (Guru) Bawa Muhaiyaddeen spent much of his time in the early and mid 20th century serving the Sri Lankan seekers of all faiths. People came for advice who were Buddhist, Islamic, Christians and Hindus. In the mid 70's westerners started coming for short visitation and for longer periods of up to 2 years.
In the mid 70's the Ashram added a second floor. With Bawa's supervision and mainly western hands the ashram was rebuilt. It still stands today as a jewel in the midst of a devastated neighborhood of Jaffna.
The neighborhood was destroyed as the Sri Lankan Army and the Tamil Tigers battled over the control of Jaffna in 1995.
The Ashram suffered minor damage but since has been restored.
