actually, the females do this to distract predators away from their nests. Sometimes the males will attack the distracted predator with a 'dive-bomb' attack. They're very brave birds, and quite interesting to encounter in high grass or on the beach.

but i think they do that to attract other birds of the opposite sex to mate!
kinda like a mating ritual
She might have thought you were going to run over her eggs or chicks. I remember one doing that when I got really close to her chicks who were hidden in the sand near a clump of seaweed. I actually didn't see them until they ran out in front of me.
