The fantastic Al Jolson performing his signature tune 'Mammy' in the finale of the 1927 film 'The Jazz Singer' and yes, it's in blackface! Great performance.

Blackface can be seen as racist, but blacks were not allowed on Broadway, so performers (such as Al), performed the blacks music to the white audience. He is even noted for his anti-discrimination and promotions of equality on Broadway. He even single-handedly introduced african-american performers. There are other performers that made the blackface racist, but Al and others did not, if anything it helped pave the way for the blacks.
If this isn't enough info. for you, do some damned research.

Thank you, no hard feelings. Just want to clear up that I don't believe we should "get over" anything that happened in our country's history. People shouldn't forget either.

You are having a hard time understanding this then and I think you're just looking for an argument because I have contradicted nothing at all. I don't agree with how blacks were treated and how they were poked fun at with these kinds of practices, but I have accepted that things like this were more acceptable in early 20th century society. As for presentism, I try not to take present-day perspectives to interpret the past. Like I stated before, easier said than done.

Well I'm sorry that you interpreted my comment that way. I'm not racist, nor do I believe that things like this weren't racist. However, I have accepted that this is how certain views against a particular oppressed group of people were expressed. I don't agree with it, but I've accepted it. I was trying to spread the idea of presentism, which is imposing personal views on history/the past. Easier said than done. I was trying to say that if you get offended by this, don't watch things like this.
