Oh, I listened "So What" in different versions and I thought it was more slow-down tempo? I guess you can play "So What" like that too...

Buy Miles Davis' album ''Four & More'' and you will hear a nice uptempo ''So What''.

HI scanlon.. a question:

in fact he plays nearly to "free" chromatic lines
,
but within a regular bass line..

ain it?

anyway it seems really hard to follow the melody ..he uses a lot of sideslipping on and back

I don't dislike this bit faster version. I've hearded other and much faster versions , and I think this tempo is the limit for my taste.

Hm i have to agree with you in some ways....i mean when i first heard So What, Walkin', Four, etc all in the upbeat "free" fashion...it just kind of killed it for me, even when i heard Jazz at the Plaza, which the tunes there were played traditionally but faster than the speeds the second quintet played..it just changed music for me. but i guess in a way, it was good, i learned a lot more...its a double edge sword lol i guess its just all about how you're feeling at that moment
