Vito the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever shows off again!

He demonstrates: sad (head down), tugging of my sock (our very first session), achoo (get me a kleenex), getting in a suitcase, stretching, dance, lifting hind legs, balance ball work, heel work, and retrieving.

And I did not plan on Vito actually doing a handstand! I just wanted a higher 2 on 2 off position and was ready to support Vito so he wouldn't fall. However a couple of times Vito did a handstand, and even when I lowered the height of the object he still wanted to do a very short handstand without any support whatsoever. So I've decided to postpone anymore of the higher 2 on 2 off work until Vito is older!

Music is "It's a long way to the top" by AC/DC

  • Your dog is amazing, I have a nine week old Golden who can sit and stay real well. But has trouble laying down and shake, any tips?

  • congrats on your new puppy! Down takes multiple steps for most dogs. So start with her sitting and bring a treat straight down, but click and treat her for just bringing her head down w/o standing up. she doesn't have to be down all the way, just her head. gradually shape further and further movements and she'll get it in no time! Some dogs need really tiny motions. PlanB is making a tent with your knees up and lure under. if she goes for the treat she'll have to crawl under your legs.

  • A shake starts with just a paw lift. Most dogs will lift a pay (maybe only an inch at first) if you have them sit and then hold a treat underneath their chin and off to one side. They should tuck their head under to try and get it and lift one paw off the ground as they lean to the side. reward that! then only reward higher and higher paw lifts. Plan B is teaching her to target a small plate with her paw. gradually hold the plate in your hand.

  • Ok, HOW did you get him to do the back leg lift? Just free shaping? I simply MUST teach that one to my female!!

  • Through targeting an object with his back leg. If you watch his "5 month" video you can see a book behind him. I've already done a lot of 2o2o, backing onto an object, so for one leg I tried to manipulate the book so that it was hard for him to back on straight and just clicked for one leg. It wasn't long before I could take away the object.

  • He's so great! I wish my dog would stick to my left leg like that! She didn't get the chance to be socialized or trained well as a puppy and she suffers from a lot of issues now, but I decided instead of trying to correct wrong adult behaviors now, to just take her back to basics. I'm socializing and training her at 8 years old like I would a puppy from scratch and it has been working surprisingly well. keep the vids coming you're amazing!

  • Thank you :) And I wish more people had the attitude you did about your dog. It's wrong to punish a dog if they have no clue what they are supposed to do instead. Much better to go back and retrain the right way! Good luck

  • Hey, I really love your toller :) Ours is now 6 months, and he's doing very well. There's just one thing, if you want him to sit down, he automatically lays down because we practised stay and lay down maybe a bit to much.

Have you any tips for us to let him sit and only lay down when we say so?

And maybe go from laying down to sitting?

  • wow that sock trick wasn't hard at all learning my toller ^^ I am so going to watch your vids and try some of the tricks, now when it's rainy so it's boring to be outside ^^ Thanx for all the tip ;)

  • I love Tollers! And I love AC/DC!! Great combo!

  • Great action, Vito is a living doll.

  • hahaha, I just LOVE those ferrets of yours! Vito's a great little doggie, keep up the good work! :)
