This is my orchestration of a piano solo piece by the great French composer Charles-Valentin Alkan. In my orchestration, I tried to keep to the spirit of the original piece as much as possible, and I did my best to keep all of the notes, only adding new ones that are simply and octave higher than notes already there. I don't really have any prior experience in orchestration, and have only started learning about music just under two years ago. So don't expect anything special. Also, I searched Google to see if this piece had been orchestrated already; I couldn't find that it had, so I proceeded to do it myself. If anyone knows if I am the first to do it or not, please let me know!

  • very good try. perhaps you want to look at the fugue? don't randomly choose instruments for the fugue - the listener will lose the sense of voicing. otherwise its pretty interesting. good work though, considering you have only studied for such a short time.

  • That is incredible!!! You are half Resphigi, half Stokowski!

Please make this video easier to find on youtube, add the words 'sonata op. 33' and 'quatre ages' in the title. Very few name it Quasi-Faust!

If only Alkan were as demanded as Chopin and Rachmaninov nowadays!!! Thank you for bringing new tastes into our life!

    P. S. @kastlesucks is right, the 4:25 and 4:36 must involve all groups of instruments!

  • cool

  • 4:25 needs some work i think...

  • Love it, you should give the score to a real orchestra. :)

  • sounds like it could be in a video game...
