too much thermal paste, hopefully not electric conducted paste if you put too much.

@jakthebomb agreed.

and then letting the heatsink flatten it out, the THINNER you can get it around the center of the cpu, the better it is, the paste doesn't have to cover the whole cpu, many people make this mistake,
hope that helps man, i don't mean to sound rude or aggressive but people think they know better by using gloves and credit cards to cover the whole thing, it's unneccesary and nowhere near the best way. being an enthusiast i like to get the best out of my hardware,

@AliceBoxOfChocolates new paste/grease always will run nice and cool, but if you apply too much you make a thicker layer and it seeps over the sides and everything, it's not good for it and a bad application can affect temps as much as 5*C +
the cores of the cpu aren't the whole surface, they're directly in the center, especially on the newer models, i've re-applied thermal paste MANY MANY times, and on many different pcs, and the best temps i ever saw was a small blob in the middle
-
@AliceBoxOfChocolates it's not necessary at all, trust me i build pcs, this is one of the worse ways because you end up getting air bubbles and stuff in it, just put the cooler on and tighten it down,
don't use all that past, less is better, you want the thinnest layer possible, you put WAY too much on, the best temps i get are when i use a BB size on a desktop cpu, you should be looking at something a QUARTER of that, literally a tiny blob
-
@cookaacoo it would run even cooler if you did it properly... don't use a credit card and don't use that much paste
-
dont you just hate when laptops get hot?
-
Too much on the cpu, dude. I see that you responded to another poster "that's funny it runs 14F cooler now :)." Now, use your critical thinking skills to figure out why your response does not refute the fact that you used too much paste on the cpu.

i just ordered my thermal paste , 3 silver ones , for my gateway laptop and for my hp mini , and also will apply to my power pc g3 laptop , even the fan does never turn on in that , and never get`s warm also or hot , probably becasue for 7 years i had it like that and has no problem at all ... :)) what laptop is this , you are applying the paste to ... ?
