thats because he uses his diaphragm more than most people. the louder he gets, the more it just sounds like air. It's not the tone of his voice. just the volume so, he doesn't suck at singing live.

you're wrong. people sing from their diaphragm to achieve more air intake, therefore making them able to hold notes longer and project louder. if his voice sounds airy he's obviously not using his diaphragm most likely singing from his chest/lungs or he's doing on purpose for that "artsy" tone he uses haha
