Marine engines usually need a low center of gravity and annular cylinders are one of some possibilties to realize it, if you want to use long connecting-rods. Unlike the sine-cam engine of Messrs. Shott (see my video www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DnUzX7qV5Q ), this annular engine was used in fact, but obviously there was never a breakthrough for some reasons, e.g. the development of trunk engines and others.
This annular engine, doing 244hp, was built by Maudslay, Son & Field for the steamyacht Hebe in 1856, under a patent granted in the same year to Joseph Maudslay, the inventor of some other important kinds of ship's steam engines. This a 1:16 scale model in the naval department of the Science Museum London.
The engine consists of two vertical annular Zylinders arranged above the screw shaft, each with its connecting rod passing from a guided crosshead on the top of the cylinder through the central passage to its crank. The air pump crossheads, which serve also for the feed and bilge pumps, are worked by levers, directly attached to the connecting rods, and carried on swinging fulcra; the pumps are all arranged above the jet condensers, which are at the sides.

I was fascinated by the kinematics of these fulcra and it is quite interesting, to calculate the equations of this movement.
