Sharks have been on Earth for nearly 400 million years, which means they arrived 394 million years before the first humans! Many of the 400 shark species play a vital role in maintaining the balance of the oceans. Every year, fins from up to 73 million sharks are used to make shark fin soup. As a result, a third of open-water shark species are now threatened with extinction. Some populations have declined by over 90%. Unless this dynamic is changed, many species will be extinct in just a few decades.
