Senate Backs D.C. Voting Rights, But Some Local Activists Call for Statehood

The District of Columbia has moved a step closer to getting a vote in the House of Representatives. On Thursday, the Senate voted 61-to-37 to expand the size of the House by two seats, giving Washington, D.C. a single seat and giving Utah a fourth seat. We host a debate between D.C. Votes Eugene Dewitt Kinlow, who calls the Senates vote as a historic victory, and Anise Jenkins of Stand Up! for Democracy in DC, who opposes the bill because it falls short of making Washington, D.C. the nations fifty-first state.

  • Representation is supposed to be about American tax payers having a voice in Congress " We the People", and in DC, we do not. This perfectly illustrates America's hypocrisy!! TAXES = REPRESENTATION. IT IS AN EVEN EXCHANGE, LET'S GET WITH IT!

  • Article 1 - Section 8

"To EXERCISE EXCLUSIVE LEGISLATION IN ALL CASES WHATSOEVER, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States"

why the hell would someone want to live there they can pass any law they want....?

  • I wasn't knocking the document, you might've misinterpreted what I meant, which is DC citizens should have all their constitutional rights respected, including the right to be represented in Congress

  • arms...I don't know if you live in the USA, but this Constitution thing is a big deal. This is what protects us from government tyrrany. So don't knock that document.

  • Utah is entitled to that extra vote, b/c it is a STATE!

  • Well, it is Unconstitutional to give them a vote without a Constitutional Amendment. And the American colonies seceded for more than Taxation. Their rights, long held rights, were being taken. These were trial by Jury, due process, no legislative independence from the king, etc. So, DC has all rights, they just need to have a vote in Congress. So, we need to allow them to vote in Virginia and Maryland elections, until an amendment is passes And the citizens in DC don't have full rights to bear..

  • As I understand it, the American Colonies seceded from the British Crown for the same problem of Taxation Without Representation, so this is not only unconstitutional it goes against the very principles that founded America. DC should be a State, or part of a State, or declare it's independence from the US. The US govt can't tax and not give representation it's violating the very Declaration of Independence, never mind the Constitution
