Presumably, the world that burst through the window opened by the scentists was perpetually shrouded in mist, a kind of nightmarish, hellish place, but the ending leaves questions; did the portal close by itself, or perhaps, the overlap of both worlds only had a limited timespan. The ironic ending works for the movie, what looks like bad acting on Thomas Jane's part, is really a disoriented person, awakening from what seems like a nightmare, having just murdered 4 innocent people..

@marigmz6 the desire to conyinue living is a natural feeling but selfdeception, and making up lies will not made it true, you realize that, that you are chosing your own lies to believe and that sometimes the truth is not what we prefer.
