Why did they have that barrier on the left just before the Halfords hairpin? It looks like it would stop any overtaking up the inside, seems pointless to me.

I believe it is because the roundabout is an opposite camber bend and there is a small yump just in the braking zone of the corner.
If cars went close beside the Armco then the left hand side of the car will be off the ground just like what Karl Jones did at the 1988 Birmingham Superprix or the F3000 cars as well.
So I think the barrier is there to encourage the cars to go wider into the corner but I never fully understood the purpose of the barrier though.
