D24 series engine, same as in Volvo 200, 700, 900 series :D . Early LT's had perkins engines, but the've been replaced with D24. I've got 3 Volvos with D24 - love that sound!!! ;)

Sounds just like the volvo 940 idling and starting from cold enoying ticking sound from these engines. My dads did this all the time

The one we bought a few years back had been standing still for 15 years, we had a similar experiance to that.
Incredible how they just start up after all that time, and you just drive away! hehe

Yes, in the middle!
And no, it is not hot, forced air is blowing under it. You only feel an little increase of heat inside, when you have parked the card and switched off the engine.

I don't think so. When you are creative everything is possible ;-) But I think this engine is to big for the small engine compartiment of the T3
