  • thanks for the relaxing association : )

What say you on the ethics of sending lichens to Mars to start modulating the atmosphere?

What say you on the repeating fractal design of lichens in coral reef formations (inter alia).

Any good documentaries you would like to recommend?

    cheers,

  • @lucusinfabula

I am fascinated by fractals.....I am currently growing the Romanesco Broccoli which is delicious, and has the most beautiful fractal design. The fractal patterns in both Lichen, moss, ferns, seaweed and coral formations are equally fascinating and I find myself examining (plants usually) my environment looking for different forms.

Lichens in Mars could be feasible...as they can withstand very cold temperatures. There were experiments in 2005 regarding Lichens in space.

  • @ladydorothea

The Romanesco Broccoli are really cool. We (I live near Rome) consider that it is, gastronomically speaking, mid-way between broccoli and cauliflower

A marginally related topic is coral geometry effects as a result of nuclear detonations (last one was Murroroa). We have a spread of more than 50 year and it might be worthwhile work to have a look at. Most assume the effects to be negative but Nature rebounds interestingly, Greetz lucasiciliano at hotmail.com

Yes...coral geometry is a particular interest of mine. I have always loved the mathematics in crocheting and was really fired up by Dr Daina Taimina, a Latvian mathematician, who created crochet designs to solve the age-old mathematical problem. Through crochet she was able to demonstrate the formula for the hyperbolic plane. Using crochet she created the Hyperbolic Geometry in coral, creatures of the sea and the frilly lettuce in our salad.

  • @lucusinfabula

Take a look at the talk given by Science writer Margaret Wertheim on TED...it is an excellent explanation of

how Daina Taimina created a fabulous way to demonstrate the formula for the hyperbolic plane.

Go to TED site and type Margaret Wertheim and search for the b eatiful Math of Coral

  • Breath-taking video, thanks.

    What is the music called?

  • It's a beautiful piece called 'Clare de Lune' ....I felt it's subtleness suited the Lichen. Thank you for your lovely comments : )

  • nothing really to do with lichen but... ive been playing a mmorpg called everquest for 7 years and i picked the name Lycon out of respect for lichen word up

  • This is hilarious.

  • I love these lichen photos and have recently discovered many lichens growing in the rainforests of Northern N.S.W. where I live.I would like to I.D. them and i am looking for suitable relevant publications

    cheers,db
