Excerpt from the presentation of Shadrack Gutto during Session Five at the Multiversity International Conference on Decolonising Our Universities held in Penang, Malaysia, 27-29 June 2011. Head of the Institute for African Renaissance Studies at the University of South Africa, Gutto speaks about the legal system in Africa that was transplanted from Europe by the colonisers, and which is still following the lead of the former colonial powers. He noted that African universities are producing half-educated lawyers within this system and called for developing legal curricula that will give African lawyers the tools to develop laws and seek justice on their own terms.
