Floods Devastate Parts of India

On Tuesday, heavy rains continued to hit several regions across India. In Jamnagar in the state of Gujarat, the area remained submerged after waters from a lake overflowed.

[Vinubhai Dhruv, Resident]:
"Jamnagar faces five to six inches of rainfall in every monsoon season. Whenever this happens, water enters the houses and completely submerges low-lying places in the city. Due to this, locals suffer huge losses as many electrical items such as television sets and refrigerators are damaged. This time, the water level in the city measures seven to eight feet."

Hundreds of people and vehicles remained stranded due to roads either being cut-off by the flood waters or closed as a precautionary measure.

The local government has launched rescue operations and efforts to control the floodwaters.

[P. Swarup, Commissioner of Jamnagar]:
"The Lakota pond, which is located in the heart of Jamnagar, has overflowed because of the rains. We have diverted the overflowing waters to the regional river, due to which the inflow has been significantly reduced. The outflow of water is also being controlled by regulating the gateways."

There have been similar scenes in the lake town of Sambhar in the state of Rajasthan.

Households in several low-lying villages of Sambhar were hit as connecting roads were completely ravaged by the waters.

Swollen streams burst their banks due to the rains, forcing villagers elsewhere in the state to abandon their homes.

The monsoon hit India's southern tip on May 31, a day ahead of schedule.
