The University of Washington is slated to receive approximately $126 million
to install nearly 500 miles of fiber-optic and power cable and seven science
nodes on the seafloor off the Pacific Northwest. The cabled observatory will
give scientists new ways to study the processes that influence climate,
store human-generated carbon dioxide, cause ocean acidification, support
major fish stocks and threaten coastlines with storms and tsunamis.
