Opening the Habitat Furnishings Natural Latex Bed

Here's me opening up the new latex mattress I ordered from Habitat Furnishings (online). It comes rolled up and sealed in a big plastic bag. Music was playing while I worked and at this point it was on The Library Tapes "Fragment V". The bed I had just put together is from Crate and Barrel and it's called the Loop.

While I am sure it is a nice bed I think all of these bedding places need to be burnt to the ground for charging $2,000+ for a damn 76"X80" chunk of natural rubber.

The prices are ridiculous.

How much does natural latex cost to produce? Probably not a lot, but consider quality control and measures taken for consistency. Those costs are only recoverable if the mattresses are outstanding and long lasting. $2000 is on the low end of what you can pay for a quality mattress. Consider that if the warranty on the mattress is 20 years, throw 10 of those away - 10 years of great sleep on a quality mattress = $200/year. You'd spend twice that to sleep in a nice hotel here in NYC for one night.

quality control adds virtually nothing to the cost.

Any good 100% Latex mattress should last at least 30+ years so 20 years is low balling it.

Nothing you said changes the fact that $2000+ for a bed that couldn't possibly cost the manufacturer more than $200 counting shipping is ridiculous.

We are currently sleeping on a Sears & Roebuck Latex mattress that was bought in 1971 for $59.

It is 100% natural latex and is still in great shape.

That's $1.50 a year.

Frankly I hope my mattress lasts as long. Of course every business needs to make profit to be successful. Back when Sears had natural latex, it was it was way more common and therefore cheaper to manufacture. Now it is more expensive and way less common - go to any mattress chain in the US and try to find one! Plus, factor in inflation and it gets up there. I'm not sad about having spent what I did - of course I'd like it to be cheaper, but the good things cost. Back in 71 a Corvette cost $5500.

was it their 6" or 8" mattress? do you find it comfortable?

8" - yes, great mattress. Had it almost a year now and hasn't shown signs of wear. I do not miss spring mattresses. This is very supportive, with no sinking in like TempurPedic.The 2" top layer makes it comfortable without losing the firmness of the 6" underneath.
