Emil von Sauer was a pupil of Liszt (1811-1886), who made probably the most successful recordings of any of the Liszt pupils. Saue Emil von Sauer was a pupil of Liszt (1811-1886), who made probably the most successful recordings of any of the Liszt pupils. Sauer was noted for his aristocratic approach to music-making, with lashings of charm, elegance and style backed up by phenomenal technique.
This recording of the Schumann A minor piano concerto op.54 was made in 1940 from a live radio broadcast. The performance is rather different from most today (which draw from the more extrovertedly fiery conception of the work promoted by Sauer's younger contemporary, Alfred Cortot): it is complex and subtle. It is possible that Sauer's interpretation draws from his having heard Clara Schumann (the composer's wife) performing this work. Despite the age, this recording is still one of the very finest of the concerto there is.
it is powerful and elegant and very joyful at the same time. where other pianists play notes he makes music.... a real great artist who did bring to us the real understanding for this concerto as he heard Clara Schumann performing this and got the sense. Not bad for a 78 years old man.... Thanks to youtube with all the Sauer recordings we have the possibility to get a close look on the art of Emil von Sauer. And its fascinating!!!
